Alcazar Entrance Guide: Which Gate to Use and When to Arrive
The Real Alcazar has one main public entrance for ticketed visitors. This is a simpler logistical question than it might seem — but knowing the entrance location, where the queue forms, and what to expect in the first five minutes after arrival removes the small anxieties that accumulate at the start of a significant visit. The Main Entrance: Puerta del León

How to Find It
From the Cathedral: the Puerta del León is on the south side of the Cathedral square (Plaza del Triunfo), approximately 2 minutes’ walk from the Cathedral’s main south entrance. From Santa Cruz: walk west through the neighbourhood toward the Cathedral — the Alcazar walls are visible and the Puerta del León is at the corner where the walls meet the Cathedral square. From El Arenal: walk east along Avenida de la Constitución past the Cathedral and turn right at Plaza del Triunfo.
The gate is difficult to miss: the lion mosaic above the arch is distinctive, and in peak season the queue forming outside it is visible from a distance. The tourist information point immediately outside the gate can help with directions if needed.
What Happens at the Gate
At the gate, visitors with pre-booked tickets present their booking confirmation (printed or on a phone screen) at the ticket scanner. The scanner checks the booking reference and the timed entry window. Visitors arriving within their booked time window (typically a 30-minute window) enter directly. Visitors arriving outside their booked window may be redirected — timed entry windows exist to manage visitor flow through the palace, and the system is enforced.
Walk-up visitors join a separate queue for tickets at the door. In peak season, this queue can be 45–60 minutes long at 10:00am. At opening time (9:30am), the walk-up queue is shorter but not absent — visitors who want the shortest walk-up queue should arrive at 9:15am, before the gate opens.

The walk from most Santa Cruz hotels to the Puerta del León takes 3–5 minutes. From El Arenal hotels it is 8–10 minutes. The most common arrival mistake is leaving the hotel 10 minutes before the booked slot and arriving late — which means missing the entry window. For a 9:30am booking, leave the hotel at 9:15am. For later slots, the same rule applies: the timed entry window is enforced, and arriving late risks being moved to a later window if capacity allows or being denied entry.
When to Arrive
For a 9:30am booking: arrive at the Puerta del León at 9:20am–9:25am. The gate opens at 9:30am; arriving slightly before means being at the front of the entry queue rather than behind visitors who arrived at exactly 9:30am.
For later morning slots (10:00am–11:30am): arrive 5 minutes before the booked slot. These slots see the highest visitor concentration as tour coaches arrive from 10:00am — the entry gate area becomes busier in the 10:00am–11:00am window than at opening time.
For afternoon slots: arrive within the booked window. Afternoon entry is generally less time-pressured than morning entry — the palace is more established in its visitor rhythm and the gate area less congested.
For the Monday free evening slot: arrive at the Puerta del León 5 minutes before the 6:00pm or 4:00pm opening of the free slot. The free slot has its own entry window and does not use the same queue as daytime visitors.
Other Access Points
The Alcazar has additional gates used by palace staff, officials, and royal family access — these are not relevant to the standard public visitor. The Puerta del León is the correct entrance for all ticketed public visits. Groups booked through official operators may occasionally use a secondary entrance — confirm with the tour operator if the booking confirmation specifies a different meeting point.
The exit from the Alcazar after the visit is through a separate gate — visitors do not exit through the Puerta del León. The palace circuit routes through the building and gardens to a designated exit point, which is clearly signed within the complex. There is no re-entry after exit with a standard ticket.
